Emergent gameplay vs. a designed game – Elite Dangerous

Frontier, the developer of Elite Dangerous, ran into a problem recently when players banded together to wage war against rival factions.  The wonton destruction caused a “lock down” in some of the game features, as one might expect during a war, such as marketplace options.  The developers intervened in the design to thwart the emergent behavior among the players.  This caused an uproar among those who favored the emergent behavior over the pre-designed flavor of the game.

More about the incident can be found in this article.
